England Announce Pre-World Cup Friendlies in Florida Training Camp
The England national football team, managed by Thomas Tuchel, has officially revealed its final warm-up opponents ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Three Lions will take on New Zealand and Costa Rica in Florida, as part of a strategic training camp designed to prepare the squad for the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Fixture Details and Venue Plans
England will face New Zealand on Saturday, June 6, followed by a match against Costa Rica on Wednesday, June 10. Both fixtures are scheduled to be played near the team's pre-tournament training base in Florida, with potential venues including Tampa, Orlando, or Miami. Although the exact locations have not been officially confirmed, these games are set to provide crucial match practice in the lead-up to the World Cup.
The Football Association has confirmed that England's first World Cup group stage match will be against Croatia in Dallas on June 17. Additionally, the team is slated to play Ghana and Panama in Group L, with matches in Boston on June 23 and New Jersey on June 27, respectively.
Training Base and Tournament Logistics
For the duration of the World Cup, England will be based in Kansas City, utilizing Swope Soccer Village as their primary training facility. This complex, located in Swope Park and operated by Sporting Kansas City, has received FIFA approval and has a history of hosting national and club teams since its opening in 2007.
The squad will stay at The Inn at Meadowbrook, a hotel on the outskirts of Kansas City that offers English-style accommodations. Manager Thomas Tuchel emphasized the importance of maintaining a single basecamp to minimize travel disruptions, despite initial considerations of other locations due to distance concerns.
Historical Context and Upcoming Matches
England have faced New Zealand twice before, both matches occurring in June 1991 during a tour of Auckland and Wellington. Their encounter with Costa Rica dates back to the 2014 World Cup, where England were eliminated in the group stage under then-manager Roy Hodgson.
Prior to the Florida warm-ups, England will play their final home fixtures against Uruguay on Friday, March 27, and Japan on Tuesday, March 31, both with 7:45 PM kick-off times. Tuchel is also expected to attend the Nations League draw in Brussels to learn England's future opponents in that competition.
This preparation phase is part of a broader effort to end England's 60-year wait for a major international trophy, with the team aiming to build momentum through these friendlies and their Kansas City training setup.
