Spain ran rampant against England with goals from Patri Guijarro, Alexia Putellas and Clàudia Pina to move top of their World Cup qualifying group. The 4-0 defeat is England's heaviest under Sarina Wiegman, surpassing a 2-0 loss to Australia in a friendly before the 2023 World Cup.
England struggled throughout, managing only two total attempts and none on target, while Spain had 17 attempts with 11 on target. Wiegman said: "A very difficult night, the diff was big. We started well but when they got into a rhythm we didn't play to our strengths which was very disappointing."
Captain Leah Williamson added: "A lot of areas where we weren't good enough tonight. Spain made it really difficult for us. It felt like they had bodies everywhere and it was very difficult to get out of our box."
Automatic qualification for the World Cup is now out of England's hands. They face Ukraine on Tuesday, while Iceland host Spain in the final group match. Williamson said: "We still have a chance to qualify automatically in our next game but we know it is out of our hands. Hopefully Iceland can do us a favour."
