England and Mexico meet in the last 16 of the World Cup in the early hours of Monday morning, with the kick-off time officially confirmed as 1am BST (6pm local time) at the Mexico City Stadium. The match has been the subject of much debate over the past 48 hours, with reports of a potential time change due to severe weather.
Altitude and weather concerns
The stadium sits at 2,240 metres above sea level, posing a significant physical challenge for Thomas Tuchel's squad, who are unaccustomed to such conditions. Additionally, there is a 90% chance of lightning in the area on Sunday evening, leading to discussions between FIFA and local organisers about contingency plans. Officials have been warned to "maintain readiness for lightning safety procedures."
Backlash over proposed time change
On Friday, speculation emerged that the kick-off would be brought forward due to thunderstorms and lightning risk. However, both the English and Mexican FAs reacted angrily, and the plans were shelved. The game remains scheduled for 1am BST, broadcast live on BBC One with coverage starting at 12.10am.
Tuchel remains calm amid noise
England boss Thomas Tuchel addressed the controversy, saying: "Like so often, it is so much noise. When you are inside of the bubble, it is actually quite calm, quite focused. And the bigger the noises, the bigger the stages, the bigger the noises, the calmer the preparation." He added that players were unaware of possible changes: "Three-and-a-half hours later, you land in Mexico and the kick-off time stayed the same. It is just not worth losing our heads."
Overcoming obstacles
Tuchel acknowledged the challenges: "Altitude: it is what it is. Home crowd: it is what it is. It is not in our favour. We need to overcome obstacles, but we have the spirit, we have the commitment, the pure will and the glue between the team to overcome these things." He expressed confidence: "That’s why I am positive. We know what’s coming. The players will feel it, we will all feel it tomorrow when the energy is on. But that’s also the beauty of it. We focus completely on what is possible to be influenced by us."
