Bournemouth have unearthed another diamond in Eli Junior Kroupi. The 19-year-old forward has been hailed as a generational talent by club staff after becoming the first teenager to score 12 goals in his debut Premier League season since Robbie Fowler in 1993-94. If Kroupi maintains his form, he could help Bournemouth qualify for European competition for the first time.
Kroupi’s numbers are remarkable: he averages a goal every 121 minutes, second only to Erling Haaland, and has a shot conversion rate tied with Igor Thiago. Among teenagers in the 21st century, only Romelu Lukaku (17) has scored more in a Premier League season, and among under-20s in Europe’s top five leagues, only Lamine Yamal (16) has more goals. Elite clubs including Barcelona, Manchester City and Arsenal are monitoring him, but Bournemouth have no intention of selling and would demand at least £80 million.
Despite his goal tally, Kroupi primarily operates as a No 10 rather than a striker. Former Lorient teammate Yvon Mvogo describes him as “a nine and a half”. Kroupi joined Bournemouth from Lorient, where he scored 22 goals to help them win Ligue 2 last season. He has adapted well to Andoni Iraola’s system, scoring twice on his first Premier League start at Crystal Palace in October.
Mvogo, who first trained with Kroupi when he was 16, says: “I consider Junior like a little brother. He says he’s having fun in the Premier League. I asked him his secret, and he doesn’t know himself. He is gifted – he has something you cannot learn in a soccer school.” Kroupi’s father, Eli, was a striker for Lorient and Nancy. Bournemouth’s owner Bill Foley, who also owns a stake in Lorient, helped facilitate the move.
Iraola initially had doubts about Kroupi’s suitability for the No 10 role due to off-ball demands, but Kroupi has embraced the challenge, improving his fitness and pressing. He has settled in Dorset with his parents and receives English lessons from the club. Kroupi is close with Bournemouth’s francophone players, including Adrien Truffert, who helped him adjust. His rapid rise has even sparked talk of a potential World Cup call-up for France.
