East Kilbride's 5-1 victory over Queen of the South was overshadowed by reports that visiting supporters were subjected to intimidation and threatening behaviour by 'a small element purporting to be East Kilbride fans.'
The K-Park club had unfurled the League Two championship flag before kick-off, but has since contacted Police Scotland and said it will work with the authorities to identify those responsible and impose 'the strongest possible sanctions.'
'Entirely unacceptable' behaviour condemned
In a statement, the club said: “East Kilbride FC wishes to strongly condemn the actions of a small element purporting to be East Kilbride fans following yesterday’s match against Queen of the South.
“The club is aware of reports that visiting supporters were subjected to intimidation and threatening behaviour.
“This is entirely unacceptable and has no place in football or within our community.
“East Kilbride FC prides itself on being a welcoming, inclusive and family-friendly club.
“The conduct of this minority does not reflect the values we stand for, nor the behaviour of the vast majority of our supporters.
“We wish to make it absolutely clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated, either within the stadium or in the surrounding area.
“The club will be working closely with local police and relevant authorities to investigate these incidents and identify those responsible.
“Any individuals found to be involved can expect to face the strongest possible sanctions.
“East Kilbride FC remains committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all players, officials and supporters, both home and away.”
Championship flag and joint top spot
Saturday's match was a landmark day for the K-Park side, with the League Two championship flag unfurled ahead of kick-off before they beat the Doonhamers 5-1.
The result moved East Kilbride joint top of League One with Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton Accies. Mick Kennedy's men now head to Airdrieonians on Saturday for a Lanarkshire derby.
