Liverpool legend Dirk Kuyt has sparked widespread discussion after appearing on television with a markedly different look compared to his playing days. The 45-year-old Dutchman, known for his relentless work ethic and versatility during his six-year prime at Anfield, has faced rumours of cosmetic procedures, but he firmly denies these claims, attributing the change to an unrelated medical surgery.
From Pitch to Punditry: Kuyt's Viral Television Moment
After retiring from professional football in 2018, Kuyt largely faded from the UK public eye until a 2021 appearance as a pundit for Dutch network Ziggo Sport. Covering a match between Liverpool and Tottenham, he looked dapper in a black turtleneck, but viewers were stunned by his physical transformation. Gone were his signature blonde curls and clean-shaven face, replaced by a slicked-back hairstyle and grown-out facial hair, leading fans to joke he resembled a trendy hipster.

However, Kuyt has clarified that the only procedure he underwent was eyelid surgery on both eyes. He explained, "What I did have was eyelid surgery on both eyes. That was necessary because when I was tired or had a glass of wine, my eyelids would droop. After the procedure, my face was a bit swollen, just when I was filming for Ziggo Sport. And I have a different hairstyle."

Beyond his appearance, Kuyt has faced significant personal upheaval, including a divorce from his wife Gertrude in June 2020 after 22 years of marriage. He described this period as the most painful of his life, stating, "It's a sad situation the family and I are in. Both Gertrude and I have to process the separation, and I have to make sure it's handled well for the children as well." This led him to step away from a coaching role with Feyenoord's Under-19s, where he had been tipped for a future managerial position at the club where he played 199 times across two spells.
Kuyt's post-retirement career has seen him transition into coaching, with mixed success. After leaving Liverpool in 2012 for Fenerbahce, where he scored 71 goals in 286 games for the Reds, he returned to Feyenoord before retiring at amateur side Quick Boys in 2018. He later coached Belgian team Beerschot, guiding them to promotion in his first season but facing relegation and dismissal in June 2025 after only five wins from 36 matches.
