Diogo Jota's grandfather has spoken of the moment he learned of the Liverpool forward's death in a car crash that also killed his brother André Silva. Fernando Silva said he was watering plants outside when his son-in-law urged him inside, and he then discovered the news on television.
Jota and his brother died on July 3, 2025, in Spain while driving to catch a ferry back to the UK ahead of pre-season training with Liverpool. The brothers were laid to rest in their home city of Gondomar on July 5.
In an emotional interview with Portuguese magazine TV 7 Dias, Fernando described his anguish, saying he still knows little about the crash. He recalled his last phone conversation with Diogo, who said, "Grandad, I'm like you," because of their shared passion for football. His wife Deolinda said losing both brothers was "truly heartbreaking."
Jota's widow, Rute, has left Liverpool and returned to Gondomar with their children. Fernando said the family is supporting her, and she is staying at her sister's house.
Liverpool have announced they will permanently retire the number 20 shirt Jota wore since joining in 2020. It is the first time the club has retired a shirt number, a tribute to his contributions on and off the pitch.
