Mathieu Debuchy has opened up about his 2014 transfer from Newcastle to Arsenal, which was triggered by an approach while he was at the World Cup with France. The move, worth £12 million, came after just 18 months at St James' Park.
World Cup Approach
Debuchy, who had joined Newcastle from Lille in a £5.5m deal a year earlier, was on international duty in Brazil when his agent informed him of Arsenal's interest. He described the moment as a flattering opportunity to join one of Europe's most prestigious clubs.
"I'm at the World Cup in Brazil. My agent calls me and tells me the offer from Arsenal. In my head, I tell myself that it's an extra step in one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe. I'm flattered," he said. "[Arsene] Wenger calls me, and obviously I go. Newcastle got a nice profit after a year and a half."
Newcastle Memories
Despite the short tenure, Debuchy expressed a deep affection for Newcastle, saying he would have liked to stay longer. "I discovered passionate people at Newcastle," he told La Voix Du Nord in 2023. "It's not a regret [but] I would've liked to stay longer there because I loved that club. It's an important period of my career."
He also recalled a touching gesture from then-chairman Mike Ashley on the day of his transfer. "The Magpies chairman calls me the day of my transfer. We rarely saw him and he calls me to tell me that my stay there had left a mark on them," Debuchy recalled. "It's classy and it was an exit that done naturally. I was able to put things in perspective in Brazil and I have this ability to shift my focus quickly."
Arsenal Struggles
Debuchy's Arsenal career was hampered by injuries and competition, limiting him to just 30 appearances in four seasons. Despite the disappointment, he has no regrets. "I have no regrets, just disappointment," he explained. "I know what I did. I worked hard to come back and I gave my all to play. Choices were made and I had to accept them."
The story serves as a cautionary tale for Bruno Guimaraes, who is currently the subject of a reported £70m bid from Arsenal. As history shows, not every dream transfer works out as planned.
