Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has taken on a starring role as the voice of the Genie in the Phoenix Theatre's Christmas production of Aladdin in Blyth. The announcement, made last week, revealed that the Blyth-born footballer would feature via video in the pantomime, which opened at the end of last week.
Burn, who scored Newcastle's opening goal in the Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool in March, has enjoyed a remarkable year. He was granted the Freedom of Northumberland in June and, alongside manager Eddie Howe, received an Honorary Degree from Northumbria University earlier this month.
Fans reacted enthusiastically to the panto news, with some saying it had 'made their year'. The show's producers noted that tickets are selling quickly, adding: 'Get ready for wishes, laughter, and a giant dose of Toon magic.'
Burn also found time to attend a performance of Beauty and the Beast at Whitley Bay Playhouse, where he was photographed with local entertainer Steve Walls. The theatre shared the image on social media, delighted to welcome the football star.
