Crystal Palace have opted against dismissing manager Oliver Glasner, despite his public criticism of the club's board following the sale of captain Marc Guéhi to Manchester City. The decision comes after a meeting between Glasner and sporting director Matt Hobbs on Sunday morning, with chairman Steve Parish reportedly preferring that Glasner see out his contract until the end of the season.
Glasner's outburst after the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland, in which he accused the board of abandoning him and his squad, dismayed Parish. The Austrian manager stated he did not care if he remained at the club beyond his contract, which expires in the summer, having already announced his departure. He referenced the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in August, saying, 'Your heart gets torn out twice in a season, one day before a game.'
The sale of Guéhi, who missed the Sunderland match and completed a £20m medical in Manchester on Sunday, was a key flashpoint. Glasner claimed he was told of the decision at 10:30am on Friday, adding: 'We feel that we’re being abandoned. There’s no support.' Palace, however, believe accepting the offer was in the club's best interest given Guéhi's contract was expiring.
Despite the tension, Palace expect Glasner to turn around the team's form after a run of 10 winless games. He has been involved in January transfer plans, including the signing of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham. Meanwhile, Juventus are expected to make a new offer for Jean-Philippe Mateta, while Palace remain in talks with Angers over Sidiki Cherif.
