Collingwood Coach Craig McRae Addresses 'Annoying' Personal Rumours

Craig McRae, the premiership-winning coach of Collingwood, has publicly addressed what he describes as 'annoying' and 'completely untrue' rumours circulating about his marriage and personal life. Speaking ahead of the Magpies' first-round clash with St Kilda at the MCG on Sunday night, McRae expressed frustration over the persistent focus on his private affairs, which he claims has been a lingering distraction.

Fiction Versus Reality in Media Speculation

In an interview with 9News' Tony Jones, McRae stated, 'There's a lot of fiction going on out there. Rumours being spread about me which are completely untrue... it's been a bit annoying... it's just been lingering around.' His wife, Gabrielle, echoed this sentiment, brushing off the scuttlebutt by saying, 'It's just one of those things. People always tell stories, we just focus on what's real.'

The couple's dismissal of the rumours comes amid a broader context of media speculation that has drawn condemnation from Collingwood's leadership. Earlier this week, Collingwood chief executive Craig Kelly issued a strong statement, labelling the rumours as 'completely false' and 'unfair.' Kelly emphasised, 'We should never be in a situation where a coach feels he needs to address his playing group over online rumours.'

Club Support and Planned Leave Clarified

Kelly further clarified that McRae's recent leave was planned in December last year and was always intended to be temporary, with no hidden implications. 'Craig's leave was planned in December last year, and he was always going to return to work when he did, and there was never anything more to it,' Kelly asserted. He praised McRae's leadership since joining the club ahead of the 2022 season, highlighting his 'authenticity, integrity, and strong family-first values,' and reaffirmed the club's ongoing support for McRae and his family.

Dismissal of Carlton Coaching Rumours

In addition to addressing the personal rumours, McRae also firmly dismissed speculation linking him to the head coaching role at Carlton, following reports that a Carlton figure had approached him to replace Michael Voss. McRae responded to this by saying, 'Oh, that's not true. Geez, I'm caught up in a lot of things at the moment, aren't I?' He elaborated, 'No, look, I've got a contract here (until 2028). I've just extended thankfully enough, and (don't forget) my best mate (Voss) works there.'

McRae emphasised that the idea of leaving Collingwood for Carlton 'doesn't make sense' to him, given his contractual commitments and personal relationships within the AFL community. This dismissal underscores his dedication to the Magpies and his focus on the upcoming season, rather than external distractions.

As Collingwood prepares for their match against St Kilda, McRae's statements aim to quell the rumours and refocus attention on the team's performance, highlighting the challenges coaches face in managing both professional responsibilities and personal privacy in the public eye.
