Dallas Cowboys player Marshawn Kneeland died in the early hours of 6 November after being pursued by police who believed he was driving a stolen car. The 24-year-old defensive end was found dead following a search, with authorities saying he took his own life.
The Texas Department of Public Safety released body and dash cam footage showing the events. A trooper began chasing Kneeland's Dodge Charger on the Dallas North Tollway at 10.33pm on 5 November. The trooper reported speeds higher than 145mph, while other troopers believed the chase reached up to 160mph.
The trooper lost sight of the vehicle, but it was found crashed in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, at around 10.45pm. Kneeland had abandoned the car, and an empty holster was found inside, leading officers to believe he was armed. They did not initially know his identity, thinking the vehicle may have been stolen.
Officers searched a wooded area and drainage tunnels, using pepper balls and a drone. At about 1am on 6 November, they learned the driver was Kneeland. His girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, was briefly detained but not charged, and later helped officers in the search. Kneeland's body was located about 30 minutes later.
Kneeland had sent goodbye messages to family and friends, raising fears for his safety. Mancera paid tribute on Facebook, and the Cowboys have started a memorial fund for her, as she is pregnant with the couple's child.
