Coventry City marked their return to the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Hull City at the CBS Arena on Saturday. Goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Callum O'Hare secured the three points for the hosts, who had been promoted via the Championship play-offs last season.
Gyokeres opens the scoring
Coventry took the lead in the 23rd minute when Viktor Gyokeres latched onto a through ball from Gustavo Hamer and slotted past Hull goalkeeper Matt Ingram. The Swedish striker had been a key figure in Coventry's promotion campaign and continued his fine form in the top flight.
Hull responded well and equalised just before the half-hour mark. A corner from Ryan Longman was met by Jacob Greaves, whose header found the back of the net to make it 1-1. The visitors grew in confidence after the goal and created several chances, but Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson was equal to them.
O'Hare strikes winner
The decisive moment came in the 67th minute when Callum O'Hare capitalised on a defensive error from Hull's Sean McLoughlin, who misjudged a back pass. O'Hare nipped in, rounded the keeper, and rolled the ball into an empty net to restore Coventry's lead.
Hull pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with Liam Delap heading narrowly wide from a cross in the 82nd minute. However, Coventry held on to claim a first Premier League win since their return to the top flight, much to the delight of the home fans.
Manager reaction
Coventry manager Mark Robins praised his team's resilience after the match. "It's a fantastic start for us. The lads showed great character to bounce back from conceding," he said. Hull coach Tim Walter, meanwhile, rued his side's defensive lapse but took positives from their overall performance.
The result leaves Coventry in the early top half of the table, while Hull will look to bounce back when they face Brighton next weekend.
