The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has postponed all 24 Copa del Rey matches scheduled for Wednesday evening following a fatal train crash in the Toledo region that killed at least 64 people.
The high-speed train collided with the rear of another train on Wednesday morning, leaving many others injured. A large rescue operation is underway to reach survivors and treat the wounded.
RFEF Statement on Suspension
In a statement, the RFEF said: "As a sign of respect and solidarity with all the victims of the tragic train accident that occurred early this Wednesday morning in the province of Toledo, the RFEF has suspended all 24 matches of the first round of the Spanish Championship-Copa del Rey originally scheduled for this afternoon and evening, as well as all other matches in competitions organised by the RFEF."
The statement added: "The RFEF will announce the revised tournament schedule and the final times for the postponed matches in the coming days. The great Spanish football family remains united in grief at the tragedy, offering its support to the authorities to help the victims of this devastating accident."
Clubs Affected and Mourning
Top-flight sides Real Betis, Valencia and Celta Vigo were among those set to play on Wednesday. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are due to enter the competition in December and have each released statements following the crash.
No announcement has yet been made on the rest of the week's cup fixtures, while this weekend's La Liga matches are currently expected to go ahead as planned. Juanma Moreno, president of the Andalusian Regional Government, has confirmed three days of official mourning across Andalusia, writing on Twitter: "We declare three days of official mourning in Andalusia, from 14:00 today until 14:00 next Saturday, October 31. We are devastated. All of Andalusia stands with the victims of this new railway accident."
