Constitution Hill Owner Eyes Melbourne Cup 2026 After Flat Win

Melbourne Cup Dream Emerges for Constitution Hill After Stunning Flat Debut

Following a spectacular debut on the Flat last Friday, the Melbourne Cup has emerged as the ultimate dream target for superstar horse Constitution Hill. Owner Michael Buckley confirmed that while no final decision has been made regarding the horse's participation in next month's Unibet Champion Hurdle, he is actively plotting a 2026 Flat campaign that could culminate in Australia's 'race that stops the nation'.

Spectacular Southwell Victory Sparks Ambitions

Nicky Henderson's charge brought the house down with an astonishing nine-and-a-half-length victory in a specially arranged novice race over 1m4f at Southwell. The performance was so dominant that it immediately sparked discussions about Constitution Hill's potential on the Flat, with Buckley revealing his Melbourne Cup aspirations during an appearance on Racing TV's Luck On Sunday programme.

"I did say to Nicky, 'can we agree on one thing, whatever we decide about Cheltenham, let's for the rest of this year concentrate on a Flat campaign'?" Buckley explained. "I think the horse should be running around about the end of August or beginning of September, either in the Ebor at York, or there's a race at Goodwood, or in the Irish St Leger, with a view to going to Melbourne."

Champion Hurdle Decision Pending

Constitution Hill will be schooled this week under the guidance of jumping expert Yogi Breisner before a final decision is made regarding the Champion Hurdle. Buckley expressed confidence in his horse's ability while acknowledging the emotional difficulty of the decision.

"I really don't want to sound disrespectful, but whatever those other Champion Hurdle horses do, none of them have been winning by 20 lengths or breaking track records," Buckley stated. "The question is do I want to watch a race that's hard on my head or hard on my heart, because it's going to be hard on one of them whichever way we go."

Addressing Recent Jumping Concerns

Buckley believes 'over-confidence' has been the primary reason for Constitution Hill's recent difficulties over jumps, but he has been encouraged by videos of recent schooling sessions with Breisner and regular rider Nico de Boinville.

"I think when he fell in last year's Champion Hurdle it was such a shock it's blown his mind in some ways," Buckley revealed. "Nicky's now been telling everybody that Yogi Breisner has been with him and gone right back to basics with the horse. On the videos I've seen, they look like a unit in a way that latterly they haven't."

The owner elaborated on the horse's recent jumping behaviour: "I think if you look at his races lately, the horse has decided to take over regardless of circumstance or common sense or what jockeys try to tell a horse to do - the horse has just decided to take off whenever he feels like it."

Clear Path to Australian Glory

When pressed about his ultimate ambition for the horse, Buckley was unequivocal: "If you were asking me what I'd like to do, that is what I'd like to aim at" - referring specifically to the Melbourne Cup in November 2026. The plan would see Constitution Hill contest major Flat races in late summer 2026 before potentially travelling to Australia for the world-famous handicap race at Flemington.

The spectacular Southwell performance has clearly opened new possibilities for the talented horse, with connections now seriously considering a dual-purpose campaign that could see him compete at the highest level on both sides of the globe. While the immediate focus remains on the Champion Hurdle decision, the Melbourne Cup dream now burns brightly for Constitution Hill and his ambitious owner.
