Como president says Fabregas can leave without compensation
Como president: Fabregas can leave without compensation

Como president Mirwan Suwarso has insisted Cesc Fabregas can leave the club whenever he wants, without any compensation, amid reported links to Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona.

Fabregas began his managerial career in the summer of 2023, taking charge of Como's Under-19 and B teams after retiring as a player. He was later made interim head coach, then assistant, as Como were promoted to Serie A, before being appointed permanent head coach.

Under Fabregas, Como finished fourth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Champions League, and they will host Manchester United later this month.

Suwarso: No clause needed

Recent reports have suggested Fabregas has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for Barcelona, Chelsea or Arsenal for very little compensation. Suwarso did not deny this, saying Fabregas, who is also a Como minority shareholder, can take the next step in his career whenever he decides.

"He doesn't need a clause to go anywhere he wants," Suwarso told Piers Morgan's Football Uncensored show. "In a business like this, he's a friend more than anything else. He can go wherever he wants, whenever he wants."

"I could even say if tomorrow he calls me and says, 'Hey, I want to go to Leverkusen'. I would say if that's something you want to do then go. I don't need any compensation," Suwarso added.

Fabregas on Arsenal influence

Fabregas returned to Arsenal in the summer when Como faced Mikel Arteta's side in a pre-season friendly. After the match, he highlighted the impact of his time at Arsenal on his approach at Como.

"I'm very lucky I'm in a project, of course with much lower level, the history, everything," Fabregas said. "But we're trying to look at the stability Arsenal had, the values, the culture that they are bringing."

Suwarso praised Fabregas's work over two years at Como, saying he built the club's football foundations. "He's helped us build our club, he created the football foundations," Suwarso said. "I always like to say he's our Johan Cruyff, as he did at Barcelona. He created the fundamentals for us. I love having him, he's almost like family. But you can't keep people who don't want to be there."
