Colby Donovan told he should have been sent off for high challenge

Celtic defender Colby Donovan has been told he should have been sent off for a high challenge during the 2-2 draw with Dundee United. The 20-year-old right-back escaped with only a yellow card after a VAR review upheld referee Steven McLean's on-field decision.

Heavy Challenge on Sapsford

Celtic had fallen behind to Jim Goodwin's side after Zac Sapsford's header cancelled out Camilo Duran's opener, before Neil Farrugia's effort found the net after Liam Scales failed to clear the ball on the line. Donovan then flew into a heavy challenge on goalscorer Sapsford, with McLean initially issuing a booking.

The flashpoint was checked by VAR official Chris Graham and the team at Clydesdale House, but the referee was given the green light to stick with his original decision.

Mixed Views on the Decision

Celtic legend Pat Bonner believes the punishment could have been worse for Donovan. Speaking on BBC Sportsound, he said: "I think it's a big moment. I am glad the player is up and walking about, you don't want to see anybody getting injured. That looked like he was late, and it looked high for me."

However, former Parkhead defender Peter Grant reckons the VAR check showed no contact had been made on Sapsford, which led to Donovan only being booked. He told Celtic TV: "His legs went through his legs. When I saw it, I was concerned - but the replay shows that he has got a bit of luck. Fair play to the referee, he made the right call."

Impact on the Title Race

Scales went on to level the game, helping keep the Hoops four points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership. The result leaves Celtic's lead intact as the season continues.
