Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca was sent off after sprinting down the touchline in celebration of Estêvão Willian’s injury-time winner, as his side produced a tactical masterclass to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. The 18-year-old substitute scored the decisive goal in the 95th minute, prompting an extraordinary reaction from Maresca, who had been unusually animated throughout the match.
Maresca’s initial success came from deploying Malo Gusto in midfield, creating a suffocating central block that squeezed Liverpool and hurried their play. Alexis Mac Allister was man-marked by Gusto, choking Liverpool at source. The system worked effectively, with Liverpool managing only two shots in the first half, none on target.
Moisés Caicedo opened the scoring with a stunning strike from distance, after being given time and space by a hesitant Liverpool defence. The Ecuadorian’s shot rose into the top corner, hitting the metal strut that holds the net. Chelsea’s disciplined defensive display frustrated Arne Slot’s side, who have now lost three consecutive games in all competitions.
Liverpool’s struggles were highlighted by the performance of Mohamed Salah, who fired wide on several occasions. Slot introduced new signing Florian Wirtz at half-time in an attempt to change the dynamic, but the German could not prevent Chelsea from securing a vital victory. The result leaves Liverpool not top of the table for the first time in over a year.
