Jordan Henderson has signed a two-year deal with Chelsea, becoming their eighth first-team arrival this summer. The England international's contract with Brentford was terminated last week, allowing him to move across west London on a free transfer.
Henderson joins Chelsea overhaul
Henderson follows Danny Welbeck, Maxence Lacroix, Morgan Rogers, Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha, and Geovany Quenda in joining Chelsea this summer as part of a major squad overhaul. At 36, he is the most senior arrival since the club was bought by BlueCo in 2022.
The former Liverpool captain revealed the role Xabi Alonso played in his decision to join Chelsea. He said: “Given the size of the club, the manager – who I have great admiration for – and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”
Injury recovery progress
Henderson suffered a freak injury during England's World Cup last-16 win over Mexico. He slipped while trying to jump back over an advertising hoarding and landed awkwardly on his left arm, requiring surgery. He wore an arm cast for the rest of the tournament.
However, first pictures of him after signing for Chelsea show his arm is no longer in a cast, suggesting a full recovery nearly a month after the injury. This could allow him to make his Chelsea debut sooner than expected.
Players who featured at the World Cup are given a mandatory 21 days off, so Henderson is expected to report to Cobham this weekend for pre-season.
