Chelsea star: Alonso team talks spark early goal rush

Morgan Rogers has credited Xabi Alonso's team talks for Chelsea's habit of scoring early in matches, disagreeing with his manager's modest assessment.

The Blues were 2-0 up after just two minutes and 29 seconds of Saturday's 5-1 win over Bournemouth and added a third goal only 29 seconds after half-time.

Pattern of fast starts

It was not the first time Chelsea have scored early and quickly after the break under Alonso this season. In their opening fixture against west London rivals Fulham, Joao Pedro scored after 31 seconds and Chelsea netted their third goal four minutes after the restart at Craven Cottage.

Chelsea have also scored in the fourth minute against Brighton, the second minute against defending champions Arsenal, and the seventh minute against Hull in Premier League games this season. Rogers scored against both Arsenal and Hull.

Manager's influence

Alonso has downplayed his role in Chelsea's fast starts, but the club's record signing insists the manager deserves the credit. Rogers believes Alonso's pre-match and half-time team talks are firing up the players.

Alonso had said after the Bournemouth win: "No credit to me."

However, £117million summer signing Rogers, who scored the quick-fire second goal on Saturday, said: "I put it down to the manager's team talks. He gets us firing, gets us going. We always want to start off on the front foot. It is about starting well and getting the lead."

Rogers added: "A lot of games, especially at home, we have won after jumping on the back of early goals. It's a good trait to have which we need to keep doing."
