Chelsea ratings: 4/10 defender off in Sunderland loss

Chelsea suffered a 1-0 defeat to Premier League bottom side Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, where Enzo Le Fee's first-half penalty proved the only goal of the game.

The Blues had plenty of possession but struggled to create high-quality chances, and were punished by Le Fee's spot-kick, which was awarded controversially just minutes after Cole Palmer was left stunned he had not won a penalty of his own.

Goalkeeper and Defence

Mike Penders was rated 6, making a brilliant save from Wilson Isidor but being sent the wrong way by Le Fee for the penalty. Marco Palestra (5) was helpful in attack on the overlap and delivered a fine cross that Morgan Rogers wasted, though he was less impressive defensively.

Wesley Fofana (4) did well on a couple of occasions in the first half to put Brian Brobbey off but was also run ragged by him at other moments. Levi Colwill (4) conceded the controversial penalty, which looked like "six of one and half a dozen of the other" between himself and Brobbey, and was taken off at half time.

Midfield and Attack

Pep Chavarria (5) was lively again but could not create anything of use down the left channel. Jordan Henderson (6) was important in the middle of the park at calming things down after returning from illness, while Romeo Lavia (6) impressed once more with a couple of nice dribbles.

Moises Caicedo (6) slipped into a centre-back role after the break when Colwill was taken off but was not as effective as he often is overall, and was booked. Morgan Rogers (5) had a quiet afternoon, and Cole Palmer (5) looked to make things happen but was ineffectual. Pedro Neto (4) led the line as best he could but lacks the physical presence of an out-and-out striker and was taken off just after the hour mark.

Substitutes

Estevao (6) was bright in the second half down the right channel but lacked the end product and committed a few needless fouls. Danny Welbeck (4) was barely noticeable except for a poor headed miss in stoppage time. Malo Gusto (5) had one shot close to lobbing Robin Roefs but was otherwise quiet. Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha came on late and were not rated.
