Chelsea have announced the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, making him the club's ninth summer arrival. The 28-year-old left-back has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, with the deal worth an initial £16.3m plus a further £1.7m in add-ons.
Deal finalised after lengthy negotiations
The Blues had been in talks with the LaLiga outfit for several weeks, with the two clubs struggling to agree a financial package. However, a breakthrough was reached last week, and a medical was subsequently booked.
Competition for places
Chavarria will compete with Jorrel Hato for a starting spot, following Marc Cucurella's exit. New right-back Marco Palestra will occupy the opposite flank.
Speaking to the club's official website, Chavarria said: "I'm so excited to get started. This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success."
He added: "There are a lot of people who have helped me get to this moment and I have to thank my family. They have always supported me and today is only possible because of them."
