Chelsea and Tottenham will discover their Carabao Cup second round opponents tonight, and a London derby between the two is a real possibility.
Both clubs enter the competition at this stage for the first time in three years, having failed to qualify for Europe last season. They are among 11 Premier League teams in the draw, while nine top-flight clubs with European commitments enter in the third round.
Draw Mechanics and Potential Opponents
Unlike the third round, the second round draw is not seeded, meaning there is no rule preventing Chelsea and Tottenham being drawn together. The draw is split into north and south sections to reduce travel, which also increases the likelihood of the two London clubs meeting.
Chelsea and Tottenham will be in the southern section, with their possible opponents including Premier League sides Brentford, Coventry City, Fulham, Ipswich Town, and West Ham. Championship clubs in the section are Birmingham City, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Millwall, Norwich City, Southampton, and Watford.
League One representatives include AFC Wimbledon, Cambridge United, Leicester City, Leyton Orient, Luton Town, Peterborough United, Reading, and Stevenage, with Walsall from League Two. Plymouth Argyle or Exeter City are yet to be confirmed.
