Sophie Whitehouse saved four penalties in a dramatic shootout to secure Charlton Athletic's promotion to the Women's Super League and relegate Leicester City, despite her water bottle being thrown into the stands by the opposing goalkeeper during the tense finale.
The 29-year-old goalkeeper's heroics at The Valley settled a goalless 120 minutes, with Charlton winning 2-1 on penalties. The victory ends a 19-year absence from the top flight for Charlton and caps a dismal season for Leicester, who have lost every match in 2026.
Whitehouse's notes-laden water bottle was thrown into the Jimmy Seed Stand by Leicester goalkeeper Katie Keane midway through the shootout, but a Charlton staff member retrieved it in time for Whitehouse to follow her notes and save Noémie Mouchon's penalty. She also denied Emily van Egmond, O'Brien, and Heather Payne.
"Yes, for some reason my bottle disappeared! But luckily there was someone behind the goal that scrambled and gave it back to me," Whitehouse said. "Today's game felt like the longest marathon ever but we pushed it over the line."
The match, played in searing heat, saw Charlton go closest in normal time when Katie Lockwood hit the crossbar. Leicester made a triple change in the 55th minute, introducing Rachel Williams, Ashleigh Neville, and Emily van Egmond, but could not break the deadlock. Charlton manager Karen Hills was in tears afterwards, calling it "a remarkable moment in the club's history."
