Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has issued a stark reminder to his players about their financial obligations as the club prepares for a crucial Champions League qualifier against Kairat Almaty. With the transfer window creating uncertainty, Rodgers stressed that while Celtic pays their wages, they must focus on performing for the team.
Rodgers acknowledged the difficulty of the period, noting that some players may be uncertain about their futures. However, he made it clear that distractions are not acceptable. “The money will be in your bank every month and it'll be from Celtic. And whilst it is, you need to perform,” he said, adding that the squad has been “brilliant” in maintaining focus.
The match against Kairat Almaty is a high-stakes affair, with a potential £40 million windfall from Champions League group stage qualification. Rodgers admitted that some players who help secure that spot may not remain at the club if they succeed, but he insisted on full commitment until the window closes.
Rodgers also reflected on past Champions League play-off experiences, including tense ties against Hapoel Beer Sheva and Astana during his first spell. He recalled the 2-0 loss to Beer Sheva as “the best 2-0 loss I ever had,” highlighting the narrow escapes that ultimately set the team on a successful path.
Despite the transfer noise, Rodgers expressed confidence in his current squad, praising their understanding of the team structure and motivation. He urged them to channel all energy into the upcoming game, which he described as “massive” and capable of defining the season.
