Carrick stays silent on Baleba links after Hull defeat
Carrick silent on Baleba links after Hull defeat

Michael Carrick refused to be drawn on reports that Manchester United are set to sign Carlos Baleba, instead calling for calm after his side's 2-0 defeat at Hull City.

United opened their Premier League campaign with a lacklustre performance against newly-promoted Hull, falling two goals behind by half-time. Reports this week suggested the club had agreed a £65million package with Brighton for midfielder Baleba, who is said to be undergoing a medical in Manchester.

Carrick keeps cards close

Asked to verify the reports, Carrick said: "I had all eyes on (the match vs Hull) today so any other player, until he's ours, it's not for me to comment on."

The defeat leaves Carrick with plenty to consider. The new-look midfield pairing of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans started, while second-half introductions of Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko and Kobbie Mainoo had little impact.

Call for patience

With United set to host Ipswich next week, Carrick refused to panic. "One game doesn't change the whole direction of everything, but we need to be aware where we need to improve," he said.

"We have a bit to improve on, it was never going to be perfect. Going behind makes it more difficult, against a promoted team at home, we can't give them much and they had opportunities. We're disappointed but it won't knock us."
