Michael Carrick has received no assurances that he will remain Manchester United manager beyond Sunday's Premier League meeting with Aston Villa. By kick-off, United could find themselves in the bottom three, with Villa looking to bounce back from their midweek Champions League defeat.
United have recorded just one win this season, against Ipswich in August, and face the prospect of extending a poor run against Unai Emery's side. Carrick's position has come under serious threat, and the United board are aware they may be forced to act.
Worst Start in Premier League History
This is already United's worst-ever start to a Premier League season, but it could reach new lows if the team enters the relegation zone heading into November's international break. The pause in domestic football is traditionally a period when clubs opt to change managers, given the extended preparation time before the next fixture.
Carrick has continued to field questions about his future, insisting he has been given no assurances and does not need any, according to The Sun. In midweek, United eased some of the pressure by coming from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2, though questions remain over whether that result marks a turning point or merely masks deeper issues.
Pressure on Ineos Hierarchy
Carrick, who was handed the job permanently in the summer, could become the third manager removed by the Ineos hierarchy, who have faced significant criticism themselves. Despite the upcoming break, the United boss maintains he does not require a refresh.
"I think international breaks are always a time when, talking about the players that aren’t going away and for the staff, I think there is a little bit (of time) to re-energise and freshen up," he said. "I think some of the players that go away in internationals, they get freshened up in a different environment, so there is an element of that, but I don’t really need it. I’m fine as I am."
Upcoming Fixtures
United face a significant clash on their return to action later in November, travelling to Anfield to face arch-rivals Liverpool.
