Manchester United Manager Champions Trio for England World Cup Selection
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has publicly advocated for three of his key players to earn recalls to the England national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup. With England manager Thomas Tuchel set to announce his squad for the March international fixtures on Friday, Carrick believes defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, along with young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, have demonstrated the form necessary to secure spots.
Final Auditions Before World Cup Selection
Thomas Tuchel has only two squad announcements remaining before finalising his selection for the summer tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The upcoming March international break provides a crucial final opportunity for players to impress the England boss and stake their claim for a place on the plane.
Michael Carrick expressed his strong support for the trio during a recent press conference. He stated, "For the boys, I'd love to see them picked for this one and obviously picked for the summer. I don't have any influence on that but certainly the boys, the way they're playing, I think they've put themselves right in the conversation and right in the picture and given themselves a chance."
Carrick further emphasised that the decision ultimately rests with Tuchel, adding, "So we'll see. I literally don't know any more than you on that one. But the boys are definitely playing well enough to warrant a place for sure. It's just not my decision so we'll have to wait and see."
Shaw Receives Endorsement from Former England Star
Carrick is not alone in his belief regarding Luke Shaw's potential recall. Former England international Stuart Pearce has also highlighted the Manchester United left-back as a prime candidate to become Tuchel's first-choice for the position at the World Cup.
Pearce told The Sun, "The full-back positions are the toughest of the lot to call. If Manchester United carry on the ascension that they're on at the moment, you have got to talk about Luke Shaw. He's got experience at the tournaments. When he's been out of the England side, we've missed him. He's a rounded left-back."
He noted the competitive nature of the position, mentioning other contenders like Tino Livramento, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Nico O'Reilly, but concluded, "But I'm sure if Luke Shaw recovers the form we know he can, he could be the No 1 left-back."
Experience and Youth in Contention
The three Manchester United players bring a mix of vast experience and promising youth to the selection debate. Luke Shaw, aged 30, has earned 34 caps for England, while central defender Harry Maguire boasts an impressive 64 international appearances. In contrast, 20-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has already accumulated 10 caps for the Three Lions, showcasing his rapid rise and potential value to the national team setup.
Their performances under Michael Carrick at Old Trafford have been pivotal in reigniting their international prospects. As the final squad decisions loom, the football world watches closely to see if Tuchel will heed the recommendations and reward the form shown by Maguire, Shaw, and Mainoo with a place in England's World Cup campaign.
