Jamie Carragher was barred from joining Borussia Dortmund fans in the away section at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night after Manchester City and UEFA raised safety concerns. The former Liverpool defender, working as a pundit for CBS Sports, had planned to watch the Champions League match from the stands but was blocked from doing so.
City reportedly feared that having an ex-Liverpool player cheering on Dortmund, a rival of their Premier League opponents, could provoke a security incident. UEFA also intervened, citing that Carragher's media accreditation did not permit him to move from the press area to the stands. The 47-year-old had previously celebrated with Dortmund's 'Yellow Wall' during their semi-final win over PSG in 2024.
Despite being denied access, Carragher joined Dortmund fans on their march from Manchester city centre to the stadium. He was seen wearing a Dortmund scarf, singing songs, and even holding a yellow flare. Speaking to CBS colleagues, he said: "It's been fantastic. We had a great walk in... Hopefully by the end of the game they're going to really enjoy themselves and I might join them."
On the pitch, Manchester City dominated, with Erling Haaland scoring against his former club and Phil Foden netting a brace. Dortmund's Waldemar Anton pulled one back, but City's Rayan Cherki sealed a 4-1 victory in stoppage time.
