Jamie Carragher has reignited his war of words with Rio Ferdinand by taking a swipe at the former Manchester United star's media career. The pair have regularly traded blows in recent years, developing a feud that shows no sign of ending.
Carragher replied to Ferdinand's post on X on Sunday, hours before their old teams clashed at Old Trafford. The ex-United defender shared a photo of him passionately celebrating team-mate Mikael Silvestre's goal against Liverpool in 2004, adding: 'Caption this.' Carragher can be seen in the foreground of the picture, as Ferdinand shouts in his direction.
The Liverpool legend replied to the post by saying: ''Have some of that bruv, you Scouse xxxx' probably... Not like you to make sure you were in the picture of someone else's goal. You now carry on this ritual by hanging around mixed zones bothering star players & asking your lackeys to film it!'
Now living in Dubai, Ferdinand left TNT Sports in May 2025 and devotes his punditry to his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand Presents. The 47-year-old interviews football legends past and present as well as giving his opinion on the latest football news. Carragher, who also works for CBS Sports and the Telegraph, has seemingly taken umbrage to Ferdinand's methods.
The two pundits have bickered about topics such as Cristiano Ronaldo, the Saudi Pro League, the Africa Cup of Nations, and Mo Salah. In 2023, Carragher labelled Ferdinand a 'clown' during a Champions League semi-final broadcast, mocking Ferdinand for claiming a contentious penalty call was 'stonewall' despite VAR overturning it. When Micah Richards asked him to name names, Carragher said: 'Rio Ferdinand. I'm happy to call him a clown.'
Ferdinand responded to the jibe at the time: 'Every time I see him it's all love man. I'm a loving guy, we hug and we shake hands and have a little laugh. I don't understand why he came in with hostility, it's a hostile energy and I don't understand it.' He added: 'He used to carry my boots when we were with England, he always showed me love. The thing that might have been, it was [Premier League] Hall of Fame week, that's the only thing I can think of because me and him are cool. We chat, sometimes text, I just don't get it man.'
The latest exchange suggests the rivalry remains as intense as ever, with both former defenders showing no sign of backing down.
