Jamie Carragher has told Aston Villa fans to "shut the f*** up" after facing criticism for suggesting Unai Emery would be ideal for Manchester United. The Sky Sports pundit doubled down on his comments, insisting that Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.
Carragher's Response to Villa Fans
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher praised Emery's achievements at Villa but questioned why the Spaniard would not want the opportunity to manage a giant club again. He said: "I think Unai Emery is unbelievable with what he does year after year. That amount of change, players needing time to settle and he does it year after year."
He added: "But the reason I'm going to go back at Villa fans is I can't believe that a manager who is so successful in the Europa League, take a player, if you'd won the Europa League three of four times surely you'll then want to go for the Champions League."
Emery's Situation at Aston Villa
Emery joined Aston Villa in 2022 and has led them to Europa League glory and twice into the Champions League. Despite his success, Carragher argued that United will always have a greater lure. He said: "Aston Villa will never be Manchester United. There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not."
Carragher acknowledged that Emery appears to have total control at Villa Park, which is rarely seen at clubs nowadays, and conceded that this level of influence may be a defining factor in whether he stays.
United's Current Situation
Manchester United have won just two of their 12 games this season, leaving manager Michael Carrick under pressure. He remained in his post following United's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, but if results continue, a change is inevitable. United's hierarchy have shortlisted candidates to replace Carrick, with Emery thought to be among them.
Emery has shown no desire to leave Villa despite previous links to major jobs. His most impressive stints have come at Sevilla, Villarreal and Villa, while he lasted less than four years at both PSG and Arsenal.
