Carabao Cup Final Hit by Major Travel Disruptions on M1 and M6
The highly anticipated Carabao Cup final between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium has been overshadowed by significant travel chaos, with two major incidents on key motorways causing severe delays for thousands of supporters. A serious crash on the M1 and a coach fire on the M6 have left fans struggling to reach the venue, just hours before the 4.30pm kick-off.
M1 Pile-Up Blocks Access Near Wembley
A substantial "pile-up" collision occurred on the M1 southbound, approximately 1.9 miles from the Wembley Stadium exit. This incident has resulted in major traffic disruption, particularly affecting Manchester City fans travelling the 150-mile journey from Manchester. The crash is preventing many supporters from accessing Junction 1 to join the North Circular road, leaving them at a complete standstill mere miles from the stadium.
Coach Fire on M6 Adds to Travel Woes
In a separate incident, a Ridley’s coach carrying Manchester City fans was engulfed in flames on the M6 motorway, with thick smoke billowing across the road. Witnesses have taken to social media to warn fellow fans about mounting delays, urging them to avoid routes using the M6 toll near Birmingham. A spokesperson for Ridleys Coaches confirmed that all passengers and the driver were safely evacuated with no injuries, and replacement coaches have been arranged to transport fans to the stadium.
Emergency Services Manage Ongoing Disruption
It remains unclear how long the disruptions on both the M1 and M6 will last as emergency services work to manage the scenes. Fans who left early to avoid crowds are now facing unforeseen delays, jeopardising their schedules for the match. The timing of these accidents, occurring only hours before the final, has heightened frustrations among supporters who have travelled hundreds of miles for the event.
High Stakes for Both Teams in Trophy Hunt
This Carabao Cup final holds significant importance for both clubs. For Manchester City, it represents an opportunity for manager Pep Guardiola to secure the competition for a fifth time and recover from a recent Champions League exit to Real Madrid. Arsenal, on the other hand, are aiming to win the first major trophy of the season, which would keep their hopes alive for an unprecedented quadruple as they remain contenders in all four competitions.
The travel chaos has cast a shadow over what promises to be a thrilling encounter, with authorities and coach companies working diligently to mitigate the impact on fans. Supporters are advised to seek alternative routes and stay updated on traffic conditions as the situation evolves.
