Daniel James made his Manchester United debut on Saturday, impressing in a 2-0 win over Perth Glory. The 21-year-old Welsh international joined from Swansea for £15 million, but his journey to Old Trafford has been marked by personal tragedy.
James's father Kevan passed away in May, just days after his son officially signed for United. Kevan had met manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and given his blessing to the move. James attended his father's funeral on June 17, with the whole village of South Cave turning out to pay respects.
Growing up in South Cave, East Yorkshire, James was a talented all-round sportsman. At age 13, he impressed playing cricket for South Cave First XI, with captain Clive Bailey recalling his 'fantastic eye' and lightning speed in the field. James also excelled at athletics, becoming a school sprint champion.
From age eight, James attended Hull City's academy. Academy coach Kris Blakeston remembers Kevan as a dedicated parent who would always watch his son train. When James moved to Swansea at 16 to further his football career, it proved a wise decision.
Kevan, a proud Welshman and rugby fan who worked for a quarrying company, was a constant presence in his son's life. James posted a tribute on Instagram, saying: 'You are my inspiration... I will make you proud I promise!'
James now aims to help revive Manchester United's fortunes after a difficult post-Sir Alex Ferguson period. His debut performance against Perth Glory offered hope for the new season.
