Leeds United moved to the brink of Premier League safety with a commanding 3-1 victory over already-relegated Burnley at Elland Road. The win lifted Leeds to 43 points, nine clear of the relegation zone, and above Newcastle into 14th place.
Anton Stach opened the scoring with a crisp 25-yard strike that beat goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who appeared slow to react. Leeds dominated the first half but could not add a second until after the break, when Noah Okafor finished a slick move involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jayden Bogle.
Calvert-Lewin then sealed the points, reacting quickest to jab home after Dubravka had parried Ao Tanaka's shot. Burnley pulled one back through Loum Tchaouna, but it proved a mere consolation for a side that has won just once in their past 26 league games.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke praised his team's performance: "We will just celebrate once it is mathematically done but 43 points is good but I don't just want to settle for 43 points, we want to win the following nine." He added that it was important to keep the foot on the gas in the second half.
Burnley caretaker Mike Jackson, in temporary charge after Scott Parker's departure, acknowledged the difficulty: "It's been a shock to the group, with Scott leaving and the relationship he had with players. The biggest thing for me as a team and a group, we cannot wait for the game to go against us and get going."
Burnley now face an uncertain summer, with a new manager to find and key players likely to depart. Leeds, meanwhile, can look forward to another season in the top flight after a hard-fought campaign.
