Bromley claimed their first Carabao Cup victory with a dramatic penalty shootout win over Ipswich Town, a side that was in the Premier League just three months ago. The match, only Bromley's second in the competition, ended 1-1 after extra time before the League Two side triumphed 4-2 on penalties.
Deji Elerewe gave Bromley a first-half lead, heading in from a corner. Ipswich equalised after the break through Ben Johnson, who converted the rebound after Sam Long had saved Conor Chaplin's initial effort. The game remained level through extra time, setting the stage for a shootout.
Long was the hero for Bromley, saving penalties from George Hirst and former Bromley player Ali Al-Hamadi. Marcus Ifill scored the decisive spot-kick to seal a memorable win for the club, who only joined the Football League last year.
Bromley manager Andy Woodman said his pre-game message was to show respect but not to roll over. 'Let's go out there and give an account of ourselves,' he said. 'My team represents me very well.'
The victory continues Bromley's recent rise, which saw them finish last season just four points off the League Two playoffs and reach the FA Cup third round for the first time.
