Brian Madjo, a 17-year-old striker, became the youngest goalscorer in Super Cup history on Wednesday evening, firing Aston Villa level in Salzburg. Though PSG eventually won the trophy with a goal from Desire Doue, Madjo's stunning debut has England fans dreaming of a new Harry Kane.
From Luxembourg to Villa Park
Madjo was born in Enfield, London, to Cameroonian parents. His father, Guy, was playing for Shrewsbury Town at the time. Guy later fled to West Africa after being arrested for sexual assault and was jailed in absentia for three-and-a-half years.
At age 12, Madjo moved to Luxembourg, playing for Racing Union before being scouted by French club FC Metz at 14. Luxembourg's academy director Delvin Skenderovic compared him to Romelu Lukaku, saying, "I think he has quite a similar profile where he's able to keep the ball, he's strong with his head. But I just think Brian will be a little bit faster than Lukaku."
Record-Breaking Debut
Madjo made his professional debut for Metz at 16, becoming their youngest player in Ligue 1. On his 17th birthday, he signed for Aston Villa after a legal battle. FIFA rules prohibit international transfers of under-18s, but Villa appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, arguing Madjo was returning to the UK, and won.
Manager Unai Emery explained Madjo's inclusion: "He played because he was showing us his capacity to work and be demanding. It is not just about scoring goals, it's about defending and how he has the commitment and discipline tactically." Emery noted Madjo scored in pre-season against Walsall and Real Sociedad.
Teammates Impressed
Villa's players praised the 6ft 4in striker. Tyrone Mings called him "a big old boy," and Matty Cash added, "He's a beast." Madjo said of his move, "I'm really happy to be at this beautiful club. The project was the one for me, the environment is very good for me and the coaching staff will help me to improve."
