Brandon Williams, the former Manchester United defender, has revealed that Bruno Fernandes still keeps in touch with him and helps him get match tickets. Williams, who is currently without a club after leaving Hull City in February, spoke to The Athletic about the kind gesture.
Fernandes' classy act
Williams, who came through United's academy and made his senior debut in 2019, left the club in 2024 after his contract expired. Despite facing legal troubles since, Fernandes has remained in contact. Williams said: "That's why he's the captain, he's an unreal guy."
Fernandes, who has been United's skipper since 2023, has been a key player for the club since joining in 2020. Williams also mentioned that he stays in touch with other former team-mates Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire.
Williams' career and legal issues
The 25-year-old left-back played 51 times for United and had loan spells at Norwich City and Ipswich Town. In 2023, his career took a downturn after he was involved in a traffic collision on the A34 near Wilmslow. He was charged with dangerous driving and driving without third-party insurance, found guilty, and sentenced in May 2025 to 14 months' imprisonment, suspended for two years, a three-year driving ban, and 180 hours of unpaid community work.
After his United contract ran out in 2024, he signed a one-year deal with Hull City. Since February, he has been training with League Two side Rotherham but is unsure if he will secure a contract.
Motivation to return
Reflecting on his career, Williams said: "I've only just started to look back and be like, 'I actually did something.' I actually played for United 51 times. It's something to be proud of." He added that his nan's framed photos of him playing serve as motivation: "Every time I go and see her, she points at it and says, 'I want you to be doing that again.' That's my motivation."
Williams remains determined, stating: "I know it's not going to be a quick process, I know I'm not going to be in the Premier League next year. I'm ready to climb the mountain and get back to the top of it."
