Speed, skill and strategy were on display at the BMX racing world championships in Brisbane, where 3,000 riders from 41 nations competed. Australian riders Jesse Asmus and Olympic champion Saya Sakakibara made the podium.
Action on the track
Australian rider Sienna Pal and Manon Veenstra of the Netherlands competed during the event. Juan Diego Pinilla García of Colombia crashed on the track. The crowd watched on at the Brisbane SX International BMX Centre.
Jesse Asmus of Australia flew through the air in the men’s elite event before winning gold. Léo Garoyan of France led Ruben Gommers of Belgium during men’s heats. Australia’s reigning Olympic champion Saya Sakakibara rode her way to a silver medal after the final race was called off due to bad weather.
Crowd and weather
The crowd reacted to the action on the track while the weather was still nice. Japan’s Hyoga Kiuchi crashed out while the other riders made a jump. Sakakibara and Thalya Burford of Switzerland went head to head. Lars Bosch of Belgium and Cameron Gatt of Australia led out in the men’s round one.
Winners and more action
Australian rider Joshua Jolly won the under-23 world title. Ryo Shimada of Japan, Joris Daudet of France and Kamren Larsen of the US were among the competitors. Great Britain’s Ross Cullen led a race before the wind picked up. Sakakibara addressed spectators after racing was cancelled due to dangerous wind.
