Ben White has been recalled to the England squad for the first time since leaving the camp during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Arsenal right-back has been named by head coach Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.
Tuchel has wanted to include White since taking charge last March, but has had to wait due to the defender's injury problems and the birth of his child. The opportunity arose after Jarell Quansah withdrew from the squad. White's last England appearance came in November 2022, before he left the World Cup camp early amid a reported rift with assistant coach Steve Holland.
White, 28, has only four caps for England. His decision to make himself unavailable for selection continued under interim boss Lee Carsley, but Tuchel's overtures to White's camp have been well received. Tuchel told White to spend time with his wife and newborn son last June rather than join up with England, demonstrating a more sensitive approach to man-management.
White is often perceived as a footballer who does not love the game, but those close to him insist he is a fierce competitor who enjoys playing. However, he prefers to keep football separate from his personal life, enjoying time with his family and walking his dog. His recall comes as Tuchel looks for options at right-back, with Reece James injured and Trent Alexander-Arnold out of favour.
