Bill Belichick’s transition to college football at North Carolina has been marked by turmoil, with reports of preferential treatment for recruits, ignored parental concerns, and players scalping tickets. The programme, once seen as a coup for the Tar Heels, now faces a crisis as assistants scramble for exits and a cornerbacks coach is placed on leave.
According to a report by Raleigh TV station WRAL, the atmosphere within the team is fractious. Sources including players, parents, and coaches described a discordant programme where Belichick’s recruits receive favourable treatment and parents’ grievances go unheard. The report also highlighted players selling their complimentary tickets for cash rather than sharing them with teammates.
The fallout has been swift. Cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was placed on indefinite leave after being implicated in facilitating “improper benefits” related to the ticket sales. Meanwhile, Belichick has reportedly initiated buyout talks with the university, and several assistants are seeking positions elsewhere, with one describing the situation as “rats leaving the ship”.
Hulu has scrapped plans for a behind-the-scenes series, following NFL Films’ earlier decision to cancel a Hard Knocks edition focused on North Carolina. Belichick, however, remains defiant, telling reporters: “We just believe very much in the process. Like Bill Walsh said, ‘The score will take care of itself.’”
The team’s on-field performance has also been disappointing, with a heavy loss to Clemson prompting home fans to leave before half-time. The 72-year-old coach, who built an NFL empire on control, now finds his methods under intense scrutiny as the programme veers towards chaos.
