BBC commentator slams Euro refs over Werro 800m final spot

BBC Sport commentator Steve Cramm has criticised the European Championship referees after Audrey Werro was awarded a place in the 800m final following an investigation. The Swiss runner fell during the semi-final but was still given a spot in the final after an appeal.

Controversial Decision

Werro appeared to trip herself as she approached the final straight while leading the race. She hit the floor, picked herself up, and crossed the finish line in last place. However, after closer inspection, it was determined that Anais Bourgoin disrupted the Swiss athlete's rhythm with a slight touch on Werro's foot with her left hand, causing her to fall.

Despite this, Cramm disagreed with the decision, saying: "Look, she tripped herself, that's reasonably evident. But look, we all want to see the best athletes in the final, even Keely said that."

Cramm's Reaction

Cramm also commented on the referees' review, stating: "Referees have had a look at it, Galvydytė definitely should have been advanced as it wasn't her fault she tripped. Yes the push and shove of 800m running, these sort of things happen..."

He added: "I think the question marks now are going to be I don't think Great Britain are going to counter-protest this, as I said Keely wants her to be there."

Impact on the Final

Werro's inclusion changes the dynamics of the final, as Cramm noted: "But she's in, 10 in the final, it's going to be tough, it's going to change the way the race would have been run. Keely would have had one plan for Femke (Broeders-Bol), there was only Femke, but now she's going to go back to thinking about both of them, and that's going to obviously be a challenge."

He concluded: "But we're getting the final that we wanted, that's the way to look at it."
