Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness was rushed to hospital on Saturday after suffering a burst vein at a charity golf event near Bonn. The 73-year-old, who spent 49 years at the club as a player and executive, is reported to be recovering well and has already been discharged.
Hoeness was participating in the 'Green of 18' tournament at Miel Castle, hosted by Telekom CEO Timotheus Hottges. Telekom, a key Bayern sponsor, is reportedly close to extending its contract with the club in a deal worth over £50 million per year. Herbert Hainer, Hoeness's successor as president, was also in attendance.
The former West Germany international made over 250 appearances for Bayern before serving as general manager for 30 years and later as president. He stepped down in 2019 but remains an honorary president and continues to represent the club.
Hoeness played a significant role in attempting to sign Florian Wirtz before the midfielder moved to Liverpool. Wirtz's father, Hans, revealed that Hoeness's efforts made the decision difficult. 'The situation with Bayern was difficult because Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made incredible efforts,' he said, adding that Hoeness helped arrange surgery for Florian's cruciate ligament tear in 2022.
