Rory McIlroy delivered a perfect response to CBS reporter Amanda Balionis by successfully defending his Masters title at Augusta National on Sunday. The Northern Irishman became only the fourth player in history to win back-to-back green jackets, finishing one shot ahead of world number one Scottie Scheffler.
Balionis had previously dismissed McIlroy and Scheffler's chances, leaving them out of her list of 13 potential contenders on the Fairway Rollin' Podcast. She also backed Bryson DeChambeau, who subsequently missed the cut. McIlroy's victory marked his sixth major title and came after an underwhelming start to 2026, with no prior trophies this season.
An emotional McIlroy paid tribute to his family during the trophy presentation, thanking his wife Erica and daughter Poppy for their support. He joked about Poppy's fondness for the Par 3 Tournament and the all-you-can-eat ice cream at the players' services building. He also acknowledged his parents, whom he had to convince to attend after they believed his previous win was due to their absence.
The victory silenced critics and reaffirmed McIlroy's status as one of golf's greats, with Balionis left to eat her words as the champion celebrated a remarkable back-to-back triumph at Augusta.
