Arteta seeks clarity after Arsenal denied penalty vs Hull

Mikel Arteta has called for clarity on the offside law after Arsenal were denied a penalty in their win over Hull City at the Emirates Stadium.

The incident occurred in the first half when Kai Havertz was pulled to the ground inside the box. His appeals were initially ignored and play continued before referee Farai Hallam was sent to the monitor to review the replay.

Hallam ruled that a foul had been committed by Hull defender Nobel Mendy, but Arsenal were not awarded a penalty because Havertz was in an offside position. The decision left the Gunners' bench and supporters confused, as the rules regarding such incidents are ambiguous.

Arteta Calls for Interpretation Clarity

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Arteta admitted he had not seen the replay and was surprised by the decision. "I don't know, I haven't watched it back," he said. "I didn't watch it back so I don't have to lie to you guys. I was surprised, because when they sent the referee to the monitor the bench was telling me that it's a clear penalty, it's pulling."

He added: "I know they decided not to because the starting position of Kai was offside, so I don't know what the interpretation is. I'm sure they will make that clear to understand it."

One interpretation is that Havertz was not committing an offside offence because he was not "attempting to play the ball or challenging an opponent for the ball".

Former Referee Chief Weighs In

Former Premier League referee chief Keith Hackett attempted to clear up the situation, posting on X, formerly Twitter: "The Offside Law is clear and a penalty kick should have been awarded."

The confusion was not made into a bigger talking point after the game, as Martin Odegaard broke Hull's resistance in the 72nd minute. The result, coupled with Manchester City's loss to Nottingham Forest, means Arsenal hold a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
