Arsenal's hard-fought victory over Crystal Palace has further demonstrated their Premier League title credentials, according to pundit Paul Merson. The Gunners secured a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park, extending their lead at the top of the table to five points over Manchester City.
Merson believes Arsenal have a favourable run of fixtures ahead, including home games against Bournemouth and Leeds, as well as a trip to Fulham. He argues that if Arsenal win those matches and City also win, the Gunners would be five points clear with only nine games remaining, making it difficult for them to lose the title.
The signing of Jorginho has been hailed as a masterstroke by Merson, who credits the midfielder for his role in Arsenal's recent victories. Merson also praises technical director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta for their transformation of the club, highlighting the clever recruitment in the January transfer window.
Merson points to the Aston Villa game as a key moment, where Arsenal came from behind to win, showing resilience and title-winning character. He also notes that Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are the only duo in the league to have scored in double figures this season, emphasising their importance to the team.
Despite a heated exchange between defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes after the Leicester City win, Merson sees this as a positive sign of the players' commitment and high standards. He concludes that Arsenal's depth and options, including Leandro Trossard, make them strong contenders for the title.
