Arsenal's Premier League Title Bid Faces Asterisk Warning from Former Manager
Arsenal's march towards the Premier League title has been met with a stark warning from former West Ham United manager Alan Pardew, who suggested any triumph for the Gunners could come with an "asterisk" attached due to their playing style. This comes after a contentious 1-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion, where allegations of time-wasting and gamesmanship overshadowed the result.
Controversial Victory Sparks Criticism
Mikel Arteta's side secured a crucial three points on the road against Brighton, thanks to an early goal from Bukayo Saka. However, the win was marred by post-match complaints from Seagulls' manager Fabian Hurzeler, who accused Arsenal of deliberate time-wasting. Hurzeler specifically pointed to goalkeeper David Raya, alleging the Spaniard feigned injury on three occasions to run down the clock.
"There was only one team that tried to play football today," Hurzeler fumed. "I ask one question - do you ever see in a Premier League game the goalkeeper going down three times? The Premier League needs to look at rules. There were so many [periods of time wasting]."
Pardew's Sceptical Assessment
Speaking to talkSPORT, Alan Pardew expressed his view that Arsenal's tactics might lead to scepticism among fans. "When I'm looking at them with my football manager's head on, they're so professional. They do every bit of gamesmanship to get it over the line," he said.
Pardew added, "There'll be an asterisk next to their name because you've only got to look at them really in these type of performances and say it's just a functional display. It's a professional, functional display. They're good, they're strong, they're powerful. But there is nothing beautiful about them. That's the truth."
Arteta's Defiant Response
In response to the criticism, Mikel Arteta remained unperturbed, stating that similar accusations have been levelled at his team throughout the season. "What a surprise. You can just go back to the previous games and you will find a lot of comments," Arteta retorted. "I love my players. That's the highlight. I love my players, we love our players, and I love the way that we compete."
The incident on the touchline between Arsenal's Piero Hincapie and Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler further highlighted the tensions, with Brighton players like Joel Veltman also seen pulling Saka back onto his feet, suspecting time-wasting.
Title Race Implications
With Arsenal now seven points clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand, the Gunners are in a strong position to clinch the title. However, Pardew's comments underscore a growing narrative that their success might be viewed as functional rather than flamboyant, potentially tarnishing the achievement in the eyes of some observers.
Brighton, despite creating several opportunities, failed to score against the North London side, leaving them frustrated by what they perceived as gamesmanship. As the season reaches its climax, Arsenal's tactics will likely remain under scrutiny, with debates over sportsmanship versus professionalism intensifying.
