Mikel Arteta has revealed that Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes could make their Premier League debuts for Arsenal when the champions travel to Aston Villa on Monday night. Neither summer signing featured in the season's opener, a 3-0 win over Coventry City, but both are pushing for inclusion in the squad.
Konsa available, Guimaraes close
Centre-back Konsa appears the more likely of the two to feature, with Arteta saying: 'He is training really well and available for selection.' The defender would face the club he just left if he plays at Villa Park.
Brazil international Guimaraes is less certain but closing in on a return. 'We just managed the last few days with him. He has been out on the pitch doing training sessions,' said Arteta. 'We have just been managing the load. He is potentially available.'
The midfielder started the Community Shield on August 16, playing the first half, but has been managing a minor thigh strain since.
Timber and Saliba updates
Jurrien Timber will not be back for the next game due to a groin problem. 'Jurrien is progressing really well,' said Arteta. 'It is the third week in a row that we have increased his load. If it all goes well, we can step it up next week.'
William Saliba also remains out with a back issue. 'Willy is going to take a while,' was the manager's update on the Frenchman, who has been a key player in recent seasons. Cristhian Mosquera has deputised impressively, and Konsa is another option to partner Gabriel in central defence.
Asked about the prospect of Konsa being booed by home fans, Arteta said: 'I hope so. I don't know but it's not down to us.'
