Arsenal have reportedly made a formal enquiry for Monza forward Gustavo Varela, whose nine Serie A goals this season match Erling Haaland's tally. The 21-year-old Portuguese striker has taken Italian football by storm since his summer move.
Varela's remarkable start at Monza
Varela has scored nine goals in as many league appearances for Monza, a return that puts him level with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Across all competitions, he has 11 goals in 10 games, despite Monza winning only two of those matches and sitting in a relegation place.
The Portugal Under-21 international received his maiden call-up to the senior Portugal squad on Friday. His rise is notable given he was considered surplus to requirements at Benfica just months ago.
Transfer fee and valuation
Monza signed Varela from Benfica in the summer for a reported €2 million (£1.7m). His valuation has since climbed to €5 million (£4.2m) according to Transfermarkt, though Monza are understood to want at least £33m for the striker, with some reports suggesting demands could reach £42m.
The Serie A club are reluctant to let him leave during the January transfer window, as they battle to avoid relegation. Arsenal, Barcelona and Napoli are all believed to be following his development, with the Gunners among the first clubs to express tangible interest, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
Arsenal's striker search
Arsenal spent £64m on Viktor Gyokeres just over a year ago, but Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen to explore the market for further attacking options. The club were linked with Julian Alvarez over the summer but refused to meet Atletico Madrid's reported valuation of more than £120m.
Varela's age and goalscoring record make him an attractive prospect, though his limited top-level experience raises questions. Gyokeres and Kai Havertz are already available as central striking options, meaning Varela might initially play a supporting role.
Monza's hefty valuation and determination to keep their forward in January could complicate negotiations, but Varela's performances have put him on the radar of Europe's biggest clubs.
