Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City, a result that sent a clear message to the rest of the division.
The Gunners broke the deadlock through Kai Havertz, who converted after excellent recovery play from Christos Tzolis and a delivery from Riccardo Calafiori. The second goal followed soon after, with more impressive work from Tzolis forcing the ball into the area where Bukayo Saka was perfectly positioned to convert. Martin Odegaard then maintained his superb pre-season form, finding the net with his right foot to leave Coventry goalkeeper Rushworth stranded.
Odegaard leads the way
Martin Odegaard was the standout performer, earning a 9/10 rating. The captain appeared razor-sharp throughout, and his goal matched his total from the whole of last season. Christos Tzolis also impressed on his official Arsenal debut, with the Greek international looking exceptionally threatening and calm in the final third.
David Raya was not particularly challenged but stayed vigilant, earning a 6/10. Ben White delivered an outstanding display, bombing forward all night and picking out Odegaard for the third goal, earning an 8/10 and an assist. Cristhian Mosquera delivered impressive defensive interventions in crucial battles, earning 7/10, while Gabriel was cautioned in the opening period for fouling Ellis Simms on the edge of the area and perhaps didn't reach his customary standards, earning 6/10.
Midfield and attack shine
Riccardo Calafiori, who scored in the Community Shield, provided the delivery for Havertz's breakthrough and spent most of the match in the attacking third, earning 8/10. Declan Rice appeared impressive from the outset alongside Bruno Guimaraes, with dependable central play earning 7/10. Myles Lewis-Skelly looked assured in the heart of midfield with exquisite composure in the final third, also earning 7/10.
Bukayo Saka was the ideal player at the perfect moment, positioned to convert a straightforward opening strike of his campaign, earning 8/10. Kai Havertz had a flawless beginning to the campaign, with an excellent first-time effort to hand his team the advantage, and his industry was remarkable throughout, earning 8/10.
Substitutes make an impact
Noni Madueke used his speed to burst in behind and delivered some clever passes to fashion half-opportunities, earning 6/10. Martin Zubimendi, who will find playing time challenging given the abundance of quality in the Arsenal midfield, earned 6/10. Mikel Merino was pleasing to see in action and arriving in the box as expected, earning 6/10. Eberechi Eze showed some delightful skill in his brief appearance, earning 6/10, while Piero Hincapie entered late to help secure the victory.
The triumph delivers an emphatic message that the reigning champions are determined to keep hold of their title, with William Saliba, Jurrien Timber, Bruno Guimaraes and Ezri Konsa all set to integrate into the squad as the season progresses.
