Xabi Alonso has challenged Cole Palmer to deliver a statement performance as Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday, while insisting the two clubs never held talks over the forward's transfer.
Rumours circulated during the summer suggesting that Palmer, a Manchester native and boyhood United fan, was keen on a move to Old Trafford. The speculation grew as Palmer's Chelsea career hit a rocky patch. Last season was his worst in the club's colours, largely due to a persistent groin injury, and it was said his poor form had left him unsettled.
He made just 34 appearances across all competitions, down from 52 the year before, but even when fit he was far from his best. Palmer now appears to be back to full fitness and signed a new long-term contract earlier this month.
No transfer talks
Speaking ahead of welcoming United to Stamford Bridge, Alonso was adamant the possibility of Palmer's sale was never raised, even when United and Chelsea held talks over the transfer of Andrey Santos.
"There were no talks about (him leaving) and he was always part of the plans," said Alonso on Friday afternoon. "There were no discussions about him not being here."
Big-game challenge
Alonso said he hoped Palmer could take inspiration from such a big fixture and put in a statement performance, given he has at times struggled to make an impact against Big Six opposition.
"Everyone needs to show the best level in all the games, but in the big ones sometimes it's harder because of the opponent's quality, the quality of the game," said Alonso. "We need to support the attackers to get the ball in the right place, that they are involved, that they are connected to the game."
